The name Va’etchanan, meaning “I pleaded” or “I earnestly sought favor,” reflects Moses’ heartfelt plea to YHVH from the plains of Moab, begging to enter the Promised Land. Despite Elohim’s loving refusal, Moses, rather than dwelling on his disappointment, dedicates his final days to preparing the Israelites for a future he will not witness.
What incredible faith!
Moses shows us that true greatness isn’t about achieving our own aspirations, but about diligently equipping others to achieve theirs. This parashah holds some of the most cherished verses in all of Scripture, with the Shema at its core:
“Hear, O Israel: YHVH our Elohim, YHVH is One. And you shall love YHVH your Elohim with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-5)
The Hebrew word shema means far more than simply listening. It means to hear with the intention of obeying. Biblical faith is never merely intellectual agreement. It is a life that responds in loving obedience.
Yeshua affirmed this truth when He declared the Shema to be the greatest commandment (Mark 12:29-30).
He did not replace the Torah; He revealed its deepest intention. Love for Elohim is demonstrated not only in worship but in faithful obedience flowing from a transformed heart.
Moses also reminds Israel not to forget YHVH once they enter the land and begin to prosper. Prosperity often presents a greater spiritual danger than hardship. In times of need we naturally cry out to Elohim, but in seasons of blessing we may begin to trust in our own strength and achievements.
The antidote is continual remembrance. Israel was instructed to speak of YHVH’s commandments at home, while traveling, when lying down, and when rising up.
The Word was to become the rhythm of everyday life rather than something reserved for special occasions.
This points beautifully to the work of the Ruach HaKodesh. Through the New Covenant, Elohim writes His Torah upon our hearts (Jeremiah 31:31-33). The commandments are no longer merely external instructions engraved on stone, but living truth engraved within those who belong to Messiah. Obedience becomes the joyful fruit of a heart renewed by His Spirit.
Va’etchanan concludes by reminding Israel that they were chosen, not because they were the greatest of nations, but because YHVH loved them and remained faithful to His covenant.
The same covenant faithfulness is seen in Messiah Yeshua, through whom Gentile believers are graciously grafted into the commonwealth of Israel and become fellow heirs of God’s promises.
Our confidence rests not in our own worthiness, but in His steadfast love and unfailing faithfulness.
A Reflection
Every generation must answer the call of the Shema. Amid the countless voices competing for our attention, YHVH still calls His people to hear, to love, and to obey. May our ears be attentive, our hearts undivided, and our lives become a testimony that His Torah is indeed written within us through Messiah.
“Hear, O Israel: YHVH our Elohim, YHVH is One. You shall love YHVH your Elohim with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”
All to the glory of our Creator !!
