THE REIGN OF KING DAVID, EMPOWERED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, IS A SHADOW OF THE FUTURE REIGN OF KING MESSIAH.
After the death of king Saul, David became king of the united Israel. We read in 1 Chronicles 11:1 “And ALL ISRAEL (Ezekiel’s two sticks becoming one) came together to DAVID, ( Yeshua calls Himself the Root and the offspring of David) at Hebron, saying: “See, we are YOUR BONE AND YOUR FLESH” (As Adam called his bride). Yeshua is called the second Adam.
Here we have clear references to YESHUA taking his completed BRIDE and starting HIS REIGN.
Back to 1 Chronicles 11:9 – “…and David went on and became great, AND יהוה of hosts was with him”.
The rest of chapters 11 and 12 tell us about the Mighty Men (giboriem) of David, who strengthened themselves with him in his reign. Scripture then continues to name these thirty mighty men / chiefs / giboriem – but instead of thirty, forty five are mentioned! When we try to identify the names of the famous “first three chiefs”, we realise they can’t be identified. We read for instance : “ Of the three, Abisai was more esteemed than the other two men, so he became their head. However, he did not come to the first three.”
Mystery?
Controversy?
Uncertainty?
Innumerable?
The Holy Spirit at work in men?
Maybe we can glean some clarity through the meaning of some of these mighty men’s names :
“God is the Helper”; “Yah has built”; “Father of a Gift” (remember the Holy Spirit is called GIFT and HELPER );“Brighten up”; ״Rejoice”; “Strength”; “God has made”; “Wakefulness”; “He will rule as God”; “Known by God”; “ God has gathered”… to name but a few.
When we read the well known Joël 2:4-9 which describes the enemy’s army and how they will make the earth tremble, verse 11 reassures us : “And יהוה shall give forth HIS VOICE before HIS ARMY, for HIS CAMP is very great, for MIGHTY is the doer of His Word”.
NOTHING CAN MATCH THIS ARMY of יהוה! Interesting is the fact that the enemy’s army is called “giboriem” in Joël 2 – the same word which describes the army of David in 1 Chronicles 12.
We can expect the Holy Spirit mightily at work when the last battle between Light and Darkness will take place. 1 Chronicles describes David’s mighty men as “ armed with bows, using both right hand and the left, with arrows and with bows… mighty brave men, men trained for battle, who could handle shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as gazelles on the mountains”.
Again we can beg the same question :
Flesh and blood?
Supernaturally empowered by the Spirit?
This reminds us of Zechariah 9:13-16 “ For I shall bend Yehudah for me, I shall fill the bow with Ephraim…and I SHALL MAKE YOU LIKE THE SWORD OF A MIGHTY MAN (gibor). AND יהוה shall appear for them, and His arrow go forth like lightning, and the Master יהוה sound with the shofar. And He shall go with whirlwinds from the south, and יהוה of Hosts shall shield them. And they shall devour and trample on sling stones…AND יהוה THEIR ELOHIM SHALL SAVE THEM IN THAT DAY, AS THE FLOCK OF HIS PEOPLE. “
1 Chronicles then relates how King David took the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. We also read in Rev. 11:19 “And the Dwelling Place of Elohim was opened in the heaven, and the Ark of his Covenant was seen in his Dwelling Place”.
He who knows the end from the beginning gives us this assurance in Zechariah 4:6 – “ NOT BY MIGHT NOR BY POWER, BUT BY MY SPIRIT, “ said יהוה OF HOSTS.
