YHVH Yireh translates to “YHVH will provide” or “YHVH will foresee”. This name is often used within the context of our material needs. Yes, Abba Father is the ONE who provides for our daily sustenance, He knows what we need before we have even asked. Is there perhaps more, something truly special, about this name?
YHVH Yireh (H3070) appears in Scripture only once, namely in Gen 22:14: And Aḇraham called the name of the place, ‘יהוה Yireh,’ as it is said to this day, “On the mountain יהוה provides.” Can you see how specific this is? Abraham called the name of the PLACE YHVH Yireh and continued to say that on THAT mountain YHVH provides. Scripture is not speaking of a general shopping list with respect to this name. Abraham is uttering these immortal words on the mountains around modern-day Jerusalem within the context of the binding of Isaac when Abraham’s eyes were opened to see the ram stuck in the bushes – a sacrifice provided as substitute for his son.
Does it come as a surprise then, firstly, that when we read On the mountain יהוה provides, it is also translated as On the mountain YHVH is seen, and, secondly, Yireh is spelled ְִיְרֶאה, the spelling being identical to ro’i, but for the addition of the yod. Thus, by the hand (referring to the yod) of HIM who has insight, vision and discernment, the One who sees will provide, and HE will provide on THAT mountain for all to see. But there is more.
Isaac was the one provided for on the mountain where YHVH is seen. Of whom is Isaac a type? The Messiah. Who has been provided as THE Substitute, THE Sacrifice for all, on THAT mountain where YHVH is being seen? The Messiah – the Messiah is YHVH Yireh, the ONE that is provided by the hand of YHVH. This speaks directly into John 3:16 and Rom 8:32. By the hand of YHVH Ro’i, the ONE who sees, who has insight into our inadequacies, into our desperate situations, and who sees beyond these, provided the Good Shepherd, the ultimate Substitute – YHVH Yireh, The Messiah, the Provided One.
One last thing. Remember that we read in Gen 22:14 Avraham called the place YHVH Yir’eh – as it is said to this day, “On the mountain YHVH is seen.” Now compare that to Rev 1:7: See, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye shall see Him, even they who pierced Him. This will happen on the return of YHVH Yireh to THAT mountain.
