Gen 9 records the celebration after the flood that got out of hand and led to Noach’s nakedness being exposed.
There are a few connections between Adam and Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden (Gen 3) and the celebration after the flood that went terribly wrong (Gen 9).
In both transgression of the guidelines of our Creator happened and nakedness was exposed.
Adam and Eve ate what was forbidden and saw that they were naked and covered their loins. Noah drank too much and “his loins was exposed”, his nakedness was exposed.
The Bible does not give the details of what happened between Noah and Ham but rather concentrate on what we should do in a case where someone’s nakedness is exposed.
We read in Gen 9:22-23 “And Ḥam, the father of Kenaʽan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. So Shĕm and Yepheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father, but their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.”
Shem took His mantel and Japheth helped him. Without looking (getting more insight), they approached their father with respect and covered him.
The result of this action was that Noah blessed Elohim , and then blessed Shem and Japheth. Confirming the blessing in their names as per the book of Jasher : and he called his name Japheth, saying, God has enlarged me in the earth; and she conceived again and bare a son, and he called his name Shem, saying, God has made me a remnant, to raise up seed in the midst of the earth.
This tells us a lot about the heart of Shem, the middle son of Noah. His actions were not for his own glory or benefit, but for the glory of Elohim. From the linage of Shem the remnant arose , Abraham and later our Messiah Yeshua.
The question we must ask ourselves : Will we highlight others nakedness, point it out to others or to the whole world?
Or will we use our mantle to cover others nakedness , all for the glory of God ?
Our mantle should be the character that Father desires from us: to do justice, to love kindness and to walk humbly with our God.
