AND יהוה CAME DOWN IN THE CLOUD

AND PROCLAIMED THE NAME יהוה

Ex 34:6-7

A PILLAR OF TRUTH

And יהוה passed before him (Moses) and proclaimed : “יהוה יהוה an El Compassionate (rachum) and showing favour (channun), patient/slow to anger (arek aph), and great in loving-commitment (chesed) and truth, (emet),  watching over loving-commitment (chesed) for thousands, forgiving crookedness and transgression and sin, but by no means leaving unpunished, visiting* the crookedness of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

Moses acted the only way a human being could – he hurried and bowed himself towards the earth, and prayed:

  • Please stay in our midst
  • Please forgive our sins
  • Please take us as your inheritance.

It was THEN that יהוה responded: “See, I am making A COVENANT BEFORE ALL YOUR PEOPLE. I AM GOING TO DO WONDERS SUCH AS HAVE NOT BEEN DONE IN ALL THE EARTH, NOT IN ANY NATION.”

Then our Father explained how He would undertake them in a miraculous and awesome way to posess the Promised Land.

At the start of the book of Nehemiah, after the prophet received his calling, we read in Neh 1:5 that he fasted and prayed – and his prayer had a clear referance to our Father’s attributes introduced in Ex 34. Although Nehemiah’s work was nót a walk in the park, in spite of numerous hindrances on all levels, they received extraordinary favour to complete the enormous task  in a mere fifty-two days. They trusted and called upon HIS NAME (ie HIS CHARACTER/ ATTRIBUTES) and the mission was accomplished in HIS strength.

In his touching prayer in Neh. 9 we again encounter the obvious connection to Ex. 34. Nehemiah knew the power of the living Word. What Nehemiah did here, was to quote our Father’s attributes with  which He characterised Himself in Exodus 34 in more detail.

Let’s compare –

Neh. 9:17 “…But You are a forgiving Eloah, showing favour (channum) and compassion (rachum), patience/slow to anger (arek aph), and of great loving-commitment (chesed) and did not forsake them (His people)…”

This prayer of quoting our Father’s own description of His Character from Ex 34 was the fundamental reason for overcoming his numerous future challenges in our Father’s NAME and STRENGTH.  Nehemiah EXPECTED our Father to act according to His attributes. He TRUSTED the infallibility of the covenant. He BELIEVED Moses’ prayer was answered and יהוה WOULD always remain in their midst. His people had been forgiven. They were His inheritance – and our Father’s response remained that He would do awesome wonders such as have had not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation.

Likewise, we have the same assurance. In our everyday walk, but perhaps more specificly on That Day when we, His People, will take posession of our Promised Land and the New Jerusalem. Whatever it takes, His attributes remain unfailing.

WE HAVE THIS ENORMOUS PILLAR OF TRUTH (emet)!

  • Mattot : Faithful Words, Faithful Hearts July 7, 2026
Parashat Mattot poses three timeless questions: Are our words trustworthy? Are we removing compromise from our lives? Are we committed to the wellbeing of Father’s people as much as our own family? The portion of Mattot begins with instructions about vows and oaths. In a world where words can be spoken lightly and […]
  • Pinchas: Zeal that Brings Life June 28, 2026
Parashat Pinchas opens in the wake of a somber chapter in Israel's history. The people had succumbed to idolatry and immorality at Baal Peor, inviting divine judgment upon the camp. • Prophetic images of hope : Pictures of Messiah in Chukat June 23, 2026
Parashat Chukat, Numbers 19:1-22:1, contains some of the most mysterious passages in the Torah : The  accounts of the water from the Rock, the Red Heifer and the bronze Serpent  beautifully bridge the Torah and the Good News, showing that even in the wilderness YHVH was already revealing His plan of redemption through Messiah […]
  • Korach : The Subtle Seed of Rebellion June 14, 2026
Parashat Korach (Numbers 16-18) is far more than the story of a man who challenged Moses. It is a warning about the subtle seed of rebellion that can grow in any heart. Korach was a Levite, chosen for a sacred calling, yet he became dissatisfied with the role YHVH had given him. Under […]

  • The Tongue: From Fire to Restoration May 31, 2026
Last week, in Nosa (Numbers 4:21-7:89), we discussed the priestly blessing as a model of restoration, where people are lifted up and blessed. This week, in Beha'alotcha (Numbers 8:1-12:16), we see a practical illustration of this in the lives of Moses and Miriam. James 3:5-10 paints a vivid and unsettling picture of the […]
  • Heaven’s Voice, Echoed on Earth May 26, 2026
Comparing the Priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24-26 with the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6:9-13, we find a beautiful symmetry in Scripture, like and echo reflecting back. One is spoken over the people, the other through the people, yet both flow from the same divine heart. The Priestly Blessing begins, “יהוה bless you and […]

  • Ruth 2 : Grace in the field May 19, 2026
Like seeds hidden beneath the earth, the chapter artfully shifts the story from a feeling of emptiness to one of provision, a change that occurs with remarkable quietness.
