In the Torah portion, Masei, we read in Numbers 35:9-34 about the Cities of Refuge that Father ordered for people to flee to when they accidentally kill someone.
Facts that you notice when reading this position is that the cities were assigned to the Levites, the spiritual leaders of Israel. People who can guide you back to the ways of our Father when we stray. People who practice, and live, according to His character and show mercy towards sinners.
Here you could find refuge if you accidentally kill someone. Here you would be protected against the Blood Avenger. Here you could catch your breath and find rest and protection while waiting for a fair trial, where emotions have died down, and people could bring their cases to be judged.
Here we see another clear picture of Jesus/Yeshua, as the Levites were the priests and the appointed judges in the Cities of Refuge. Yeshua, our high priest, is also the one who will judge us all in the end as we find refuge in Him.
The picture of Yeshua becomes even clearer as we see that the one guilty of killing someone accidentally, is not only declared innocent after a trial, but is totally set free only after the death of the High Priest.
The death of our High Priest, Yeshua, on the cross has set us free from the accidental death accusation. Through Him and in Him we receive total freedom.
The Scriptures have some beautiful gems hidden for us to find. This one sentence breaks open one of our Father’s love letters for us. A love letter written with Grace.
We might think that this does not apply to us, seeing that we do not kill people and there are no cities of refuge anymore.
Looking at the number of cities that God declared as cities of refuge, we see a total of six. This number represents the number of man and our fleshly desires. In our fleshly, sinful nature of pride and nastiness, we kill other people. Not physically, but we kill their character by what comes from our mouths. This is seldom premeditated, but in instant moments of weakness, it happens. When we are angry, or when we feel harmed or even just out of pure pride of seeing ourselves as less sinful, words that cause death, would pour from our lips.
This is our form of manslaughter and all of us have done it at some stage of our lives.
Our loving, merciful Creator has made provision for this long ago.
Although there are no physical cities, He gave us places in our communities where we can flee to. Places where we can feel safe, where we can experience forgiveness through our Messiah and receive merciful guidance to receive and experience complete healing.
We are thankful for the community that Father is blessing us with, a fellowship of friends, a family of believers in George, a place that we can call home.
All to the Glory of our loving Father, our Creator, our King.
